A generous and giving heart is one of the best attributes of Southerners. We help our neighbors when the going gets rough, and the same is true for our charitable organizations. At Eat Y’all, charitable giving and support of charitable endeavors is a core value. Whenever the opportunity arises, we will partner with charitable foundations and non-profit organizations to help our neighbors. We organize many culinary events throughout the year, and we are called upon to support those in our community who find themselves in need through the funds raised at these events. 4‑H is delivered by Cooperative Extension—a community of more than 100 public universities across the nation that provides experiences where young people learn by doing. For more than 100 years, 4‑H has welcomed young people of all beliefs and backgrounds, giving kids a voice to express who they are and how they make their lives and communities better. Through life-changing 4‑H programs, nearly six million kids have taken on critical societal issues, such as addressing community health inequities, engaging in civil discourse and advocating for equity and inclusion for all.
AMERICAN FARM BUREAU FOUNDATION FOR AGRICULTURE
Imagine a world more connected to Agriculture… Where did your dinner come from? How did it get there? Who grew it? Why did they grow it that way?
The American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture is helping learners of all ages understand agriculture and the important role it plays in our daily lives.
Together, we can tell the story of agriculture. We can reconnect American consumers with the farmers and ranchers who feed them. And we can show consumers that our collective future rests on all of us supporting agriculture – and growing together.
Extra Table is a non-profit organization committed to ending hunger by providing food pantries and soup kitchens with the new and healthy food they need to feed the hungry in their community.
They do that by purchasing food and having it delivered to emergency food centers in need. Extra Table is proudly partnered with the nation’s largest food distribution company, Sysco. By partnering with Sysco, they are able to purchase healthy food at the lowest possible price point, thereby supplying food pantries and soup kitchens with the food they need.
THE GIVING KITCHEN
The Giving Kitchen (GK) is a nonprofit organization based in Atlanta, GA, inspired by an outpouring of support from the hospitality industry when Chef Ryan Hidinger was diagnosed with late-stage cancer in December 2012.
GK provides direct grants to members of the metro Atlanta restaurant community who are in financial need, to help cover cost of living expenses while they recover from an accident, unanticipated illness, or natural disaster. GK also provides direct grants to workers with financial need to help pay for funeral arrangements for immediate family members.
GK provides two separate types of grants: direct grants that pay basic living expenses, and matching grants that match funds raised by a restaurant team on the behalf of a worker in need.
JAMES BEARD FOUNDATION
The James Beard Foundation’s mission is to celebrate, nurture, and honor chefs and other leaders making America’s food culture more delicious, diverse, and sustainable for everyone.
As part of our mission to make America’s food culture more delicious, diverse, and sustainable for everyone, the James Beard Foundation is dedicated to cultivating leadership, recognizing excellence, and producing results through our programs and awards. The foundation is guided by the values of respect, transparency, diversity, sustainability, and equality. We believe that in order to achieve our mission, it is expected that everyone who works in and with the foundation shares similar values and operates with integrity.
THE NASHVILLE FOOD PROJECT
Bringing people together to grow, cook and share nourishing food, with the goals of cultivating community and alleviating hunger in our city.
The Nashville Food Project is sharing food and supporting communities in variety of ways:
- Grow – In our Gardens we grow organic food intensively, and share resources with others interested in growing their own food.
- Cook – In our Kitchens, we use recovered, donated and garden-grown food to prepare and cook healthy, hot meals.
- Share – From our Food Trucks we distribute meals from our kitchen and fresh produce from our gardens to people in need.
OPERATION BBQ RELIEF
Operation BBQ Relief strives to provide compassion, and offer hope and friendship to those whose lives have been affected by disasters across the United States. We leverage our expertise in cooking and catering barbecue meals with our ability to quickly mobilize our teams into any area where disaster disrupts and tears apart the lives of Americans.
Refill Cafe will be a non-profit workforce development café in the community of west Jackson, Mississippi located at the former Koinonia Coffee House on the Jackson State University Parkway.
Refill Café’s mission is to empower youth by providing an innovative and holistic job training and life skills program. Refill Cafe will operate a vibrant restaurant and retail establishment with training stations to develop functional competencies and occupational skills for program participants. In addition, Refill will address the participants’ holistic development to ensure they are set up for success beyond the program.
Refill Cafe intends to offer social service support, educational support, mentoring, and employment services—all offered either directly through Refill Café or indirectly through a partner. The program will be a long-term anchor for participants as we help place them into internships and jobs around the City of Jackson.
The Refinery was created in November of 2013 to sustain the home of Still Waters, a safe place for women and their children in south Georgia. We seek to provide job skills, develop opportunities and create a sense of community for our current and former residents. Our goal is to create something beautiful from regional and recycled resources; to invest in the potential of our ladies and to be an ever-present light in our community.
We take our name from Psalm 66:10 as we believe we are all in a refining process. We are carried through difficult times, we are stripped of things that seem to matter and we are being made new. We are best when we work together; rubbing like sandpaper at times to a smoother, softer, level surface.
SOUTHERN FOODWAYS ALLIANCE
The Southern Foodways Alliance documents, studies, and explores the diverse food cultures of the changing American South. Our work sets a welcome table where all may consider our history and our future in a spirit of respect and reconciliation.
A member-supported organization based at the University of Mississippi’s Center for the Study of Southern Culture, we collect oral histories, produce films and podcasts, publish great writing, sponsor scholarship, mentor students, and stage events that serve as progressive and inclusive catalysts for the greater South.
SOUTHERN SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE WORKING GROUP
The Southern Sustainable Agriculture Working Group, commonly known as Southern SAWG, was founded in 1991 to foster a movement towards a more sustainable farming and food system—one that is ecologically sound, economically viable, socially just and humane. We function as a regional entity, working with and through hundreds of associated organizations across 13 southern states. By building partnerships, sharing information and conducting analysis, we transform isolated ideas and innovations into practical tools and approaches for widespread use.
The vision of Southern SAWG is a world in which everyone has access to wholesome food from a just, sustainable farming and food system that supports good environmental stewardship and quality of life for all.
