Pop-up restaurants continue to be the rave in 2013 and Ty Thames, owner and executive chef, of Restaurant Tyler in downtown Starkville, MS, kicked off 2013 with a fabulous one. A pop up restaurant is when an existing restaurant changes their theme/menu for a single night or limited time.
Restaurant Tyler hosted the fabulous ‘Burgers and Blue Plates Pop Up’ last week. The concept was to take the fine dining of Restaurant Tyler and make it into a casual Southern dinner for the night. Let me just tell you, the menu itself was spectacular. It featured several blue plate options, with everything from Meatloaf to Chicken, fried or grilled, and the burger menu was equally loaded with delicious options – so much so that our waiter had to come back twice before we could decide.
After several mouth-watering minutes we decided on the Grilled Chicken Blue Plate with Macaroni and Cheese, Good Ole’ BlackEyed Peas, and of course cornbread. (Who eats black eyed peas without cornbread, come on’ we’re in the heart of Dixie here?) I’m harping on the cornbread because as we were eating, my dinner partner asked me, “Do you think it’s appropriate to ask for extra cornbread, this might be the best I’ve ever had.”
The burger we chose was the “South of the Border Burger,” and the name says it all. This burger came cooked medium and dripping, yes literally dripping, with queso dip and fried onions. The burger was basically heaven on a bun. I’m not lying.
After we stuffed ourselves on our blue plate and burger, we decided we might as well pile dessert on this fine meal. Because, I asked, what great meal is complete without dessert? None.
The dessert menu at Restaurant Tyler is one of the best anywhere, and on top of the regular menu, they also always have a window full of goodies created daily by their pastry chef!
We opted for the Banana Pudding with Salted Caramel from the window and Tiramisu Cheesecake off of the menu.
Overall, I don’t think you could have gone wrong with anything on the menu. But I can personally attest to what we ordered. It. Was. Fabulous.
Any time Chef Ty is cooking, count me in.
